A Filipino farmer plows his land as lava cascades down the slopes of Mayon volcano in Legazpi City, Albay province in the Bicol region of the Philippines, 16 December 2009. Ash explosions shook the restive volcano in the eastern Philippines as frightened residents fled their homes, the government said. The ashes reached as high as 500 metres above the crater. The agency said 78 volcanic earthquakes and tremors were recorded overnight and molten lava rolled down continuously from Mayon's crater. Albay Governor Joey Salceda said more than 22,000 people had been moved to evacuation centres by late 15 December and thousands more would be evacuated within the next two days.

A NASA Earth Observatory handout photo released 16 december 2009 showing an aerial view of Mayon Volcano, Philippines. Tens of thousands of people living within the danger zone of Mayon Volcano in the Philippines were forced to evacuate to emergency shelters in mid-December 2009 as tremors, incandescent lava at the summit, and minor ash falls suggested a major eruption was on the way. On the evening of 14 December 2009, the local volcano observatory raised the alert level to Level 3, which means 'magma is close to the crater and hazardous explosive eruption is imminent.'

A Filipino girl peers from a window of a classroom turned into a temporary evacuation center at Gogon elementary school in Legazpi City, Albay province in the Bicol region of the Philippines, 16 December 2009. Ash explosions shook the restive Mayon volcano in the eastern Philippines as frightened residents fled their homes, the government said.
