Competitors of the Glacier Patrol, Patrouille des Glaciers, wait for the start of the Glacier Patrol race in the village of Zermatt, Switzerland, late 21 April 2010. The Glacier Patrol (Patrouille des Glaciers) organized by the Swiss Army sees highly-experienced hiker-skiers trekking across the Haute Route along the Swiss-Italian border from Zermatt to Verbier. The race covers 53km (31.8 miles) by foot and ski, with over 7000 m gained and lost along the way.
