A group of equestrians participate in the so-called ‘Blutritt’, procession of the Holy Blood, in Weingarten, Germany, 14 May 2010. The procession takes place annually on the day after Ascension Day. The ‘Blutritt’ is Europe’s largest equestrian procession during which about 2,800 equestrians dressed in black process through festively decorated streets. This year, the procession was headed by a Benedictine carrying the Relic of the Holy Blood for the last time. Although Weingarten Abbey has to close in 2010 due to a lack of budding monks, the ‘Blutritt’ will be kept alive.
