A handout photo released by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) on 28 July 2010 shows a Giant Mekong Catfish caught by Thai fishermen at Chiang Khong city along the Mekong River, Chiang Rai province, northern Thailand, 01 May 2005. The Giant Catfish weight 292 kg which is the largest in the record since 1981. Laos’ plan to build a hydro-power dam on the Mekong River threatens the survival of four giant fish species including a freshwater stingray that can weigh up to 600 kilograms, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) warned in its report River of Giants: Giant Fish of the Mekong. Mekong giant catfish will be driven to extinction if hydropwer dams planned for the river go ahead, the report stated.
