A Palestinian teacher studies with a student, not seen, as she teaches at a Koran studies day camp for girls in Gaza City. Palestinian girls have limited options for summer time activities in the Gaza Strip because of the strict Islamic laws imposed by Hamas. Boys have more options and many attend summer camps run by militant groups like Islamic Jihad or the ruling Hamas party. Girls are mostly limited to UNRWA day camps, Koran studies or a few group activities, like arts and crafts, which are opened to both sexes. Hamas frowns on sports for girls because Islamic rules of modesty have to be observed which restricts movement when doing athletic exercises.
