Svizzera, San Gottardo: crolla l’ultima parete del tunnel più lungo al mondo
Minatori l'attività della macchina perforatrice "Sissi"
Miners wait prior to the tunnel drilling machine “Sissi” breaks through the last section of the Gotthard Base Tunnel near Faido in the canton of Tessin, Switzerland, Oct. 15, 2010. With 57 kilometers (35-miles) the new St. Gotthard tunnel is the world’s longest tunnel. The 13.157 billion Swiss franc (9.6 billion euros, 13.6 billion US dollars) Alptransit project, which is due to be operational in 2017, constitutes the center piece of the New Railway Link through the Alps. Engineers are expected to start up the massive drilling machine - nicknamed Sissi - at 2 p.m. (1200 GMT; 8 a.m. EDT) so it can chew through the last remaining rock separating the two ends of the 57-kilometer (35.4-mile) Gotthard Base Tunnel.
