South Korea’s National Treasures No,1 Sungnyemun burns down in Seoul, South Korea. on 11 February 2008. Sungnyemun is the principal gate of the city fortress surrounding Seoul, the capital of Joseon. The oldest building remaining in Seoul, it is also known as ‘Namdaemun’ (Southern Gate) in reference to its location. Construction began in January of the 5th year of Taejo (1396); the framework was completed in October of the same year.
