On 26 April 1986, a nuclear accident occurred at Unit 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the former Ukrainian Republic of the Soviet Union. Twenty-five years after the Chernobyl disaster, the contaminated zone with the abandoned town of Pripyat has become a popular tourist destination for numerous visitors. Pripyat was built in 1970 to house employees of the nearby Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and their families. Some 50,000 residents from and around Pripyat have been evacuated after the 1986 accident. The 25th anniversary of what is considered the world’s worst nuclear power plant accident in history is marked on 26 April 2011.
