Sony World Photography Awards 2011: le foto dei vincitori
Portraiture - Alain Willaume (France)/Tendance Floue/Galerie Vu
The Common Part di Alain Willaume
Vincitore nella categoria Ritratto
I was looking for a strong contrast between the empty plates, the daily background on one side and the gaze, the intensity and the detachment of the subjects portrayed on the other side. The portraits are aimed to take us to the crossroads between two worlds: the privacy of an intimate ritual and the boundaries of an inner landscape.
At the end of the meal, Alain Willaume asks each members of the families to distance themselves from the reality and to seek inner concentration. Like a modern Vanitas, his images reflect this remoteness and invite the viewer to an unquiet confrontation : the contrast between the empty plates, the daily background on one side, the gaze, the intensity and the detachment of the subjects portrayed on the other. The photographer takes us to the crossroads between two worlds: the privacy of a daily ritual and the boundaries of an inner landscape.
The series has been made during a SETSE Project residency supported by the Municipality of Reggio Emilia (Italy) with the help of the Europea Fotografia festival and Rencontres d’Arles.
