The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on 22 July made a plea to the international community, saying approximately 1.6 billion US dollars (1.1 billion euro) is needed in aid to avert a humanitarian crisis in drought-hit Somalia. The Horn of Africa region continues to suffer from the worst drought in 60 years as tens of thousands of Somalis are feared dead in a famine caused by consecutive droughts over the last few years.
