Gemelli di orangotango del Borneo nati per la prima volta da un'esemplare in cattività
A Hong Kong Government handout photo dated 12 July 2011 shows the first Bornean orangutans twins ever to be born in captivity at Hong Kong’s Zoological and Botanical Gardens, Hong Kong, China, 13 July 2011. The twin male (R) and female (L) were born to father orangtutan Vandu and mother orangutan Raba on 08 July 2011. According to local media, both mother and twins are doing well, but animal welfare activists from the Hong Kong Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) have said that the baby twin orangutans should be returned to their native Borneo to be released into the wild, as the climate in Hong Kong is unsuitable and the facilities at Zoological and Botanical Gardens are sub-standard. The 272 square metre and five metre tall cage for the orangutans consists of a concrete floor, reinforced glass panels, an artificial boulder, a cement-paved pond, and a concrete sleeping platform. Bornean orangutans are an endangered species threatened by habitat loss due to poaching and their rain forests being replaced by palm oil plantations for food and bio fuel production.
