A handout photo shows the 236 metre long Liberian registered cargo ship Rena stranded on the Astrolabe Reef near Tauranga, New Zealand, on 05 October 2011.
The ship, reported to be leaking oil, struck the reef around 2.20am with the vessel reportedly on a 12 degree list and two of its cargo holds flooded. The 25 crew members were unhurt on the ship, which a Maritime New Zealand spokeswoman said was stuck tight on the Astrolabe Reef, about 22 kilometres off the coast. The Liberia-flagged Rena was reportedly heading into Tauranga from the port of Napier, further south down the coast, when it hit the reef.
