ZOLDER, BELGIUM: Rom Houben with his mother Josephine Nicolaas Houben, pictured at the hospital in Heusden-Zolder, Wednesday 25 November 2009. For 23 years, people thought Rom Houben was in a coma after a car accident in 1983, but we now know that he was paralysed and unable to communicate. Three years ago Doctor Steven Laureys gave him a specially-adapted computer and then discovered he was not in a coma.
